Having a tattoo can be an excellent addition to your body, but the proper precautions are to be taken, to avoid, infections, messed up tattoos and regrets. When I was a teenager all I could think about was getting a tattoo. My mother said no, so of course that made me want it that much more. You should be mature enough to make a decision that will be forever with you

I have had my tattoo for 21 years now, and for the life of me I can not remember why it was so important for me to get it. You never know what you are going to me doing in the future so I suggest you get your tattoo in a place that can be covered up. And don't get it in a place that is going to sag, your breast maybe perky now but they won't be when you are seventy. That cute little butterfly will be a blob of colors that you will be trying to remember what it used to be. Getting a tattoo is a permanent part of you so be smart about it.

Ever get a tattoo that you've regretted at a later stage? It's a common problem. 35% of people getting a tattoo regret it. I'm in that number. The reason? We didn't PLAN IT properly.

It's one of the worst scenarios isn't it? You've gone out with your pals, had a great time partying, and you've decided to seal the occasion by all going to a local tattoo parlour and having some incredibly ill thought out scribble tattooed on your arms.

Sounded like fun at the time didn't it? Now your stuck with it, having to look at it or the rest of your life, trying to cover it up, or thinking about expensive laser removal options.

1. What style do you want?

Tribal, Japanese, portrait, Aztec, old school etc. There's a lot to choose from. You may want to add to it later. Better to pick a one style rather an a mishmash of different ones.

2. How big do you want it?

Intricate tattoos do not necessarily work with smaller designs as you can't see it properly. If you want art with a lot going on in it it's best to go bigger. One mistake most people make (including me) is to start off with a very small design only to be unhappy with the size later and go bigger by adding other designs around it.

3. Where do you want it?

This is very important as you may want to keep it hidden for work purposes or whatnot. A tattoo on the neck might look cool now but you will have trouble hiding it if you need to later. Upper arms and torso's work best as you can cover with clothes!

4. Which tattoo artist?

The world is your oyster. There are plenty of artists local to you, just do some internet research. Most have an online portfolio of some kind. Pick the best you can within reason. Money shouldn't be a factor with a decision as important as this. If you can't afford it, wait and save up.

There are many more considerations but these I consider the most important. There are more and more online tattoo galleries appearing on the internet every year. You have the world of tattoo designs at your fingertips.

Do your research, find what you really want, and go to the tattoo artist that you really want. Don't just get any old tattoo on a whim. I guarantee there's a high chance you wont be completely happy with it.
