The old school tattoo technique was a manual step. Inmates would take a ball point pen and remove the inside and replace it with a paper clip. It is very time consuming and it depends how long is the sentence, or how much of a tattoo production you want to make.

This technique is very long because you have to go point by point to make your tattoo so patience is the key here.

The automated tattoo technique with a custom tattoo machine is to take the same pen but to add a cassette tape motor to it.

Cassette tapes even if they are obsolete in the today's world are still around in prisons. When you can get your hand on a cassette tape motor in prison you have a prized possession.

So people attach the motor to the ball pen with tape and make themselves a cool 4 batteries pack.

As for the needle for this machine, guitar strings are the way to go because they are customizable and flexible.

The thing that people do, is to cut the string to a certain length so it will be long enough that you will be able to attach one end to the motor. You leave the other end long enough so the point will come on and off of the pen body (like a sewing machine).

The guitar string is long enough to make 3 needles out of one length, so every user will have its own and there will not be any needle trading. This is good thing because of today's tattoo related diseases like HIV or Hepatitis. Nobody wants to trade a needle in prison.

For the ink some people use all sorts of methods but the one I know is to take a lighter and burn the bottom of a soda can and collect the ash from it. It is very effective.Then it is mixed with Vaseline and you are ready to go.
