Since the days of sailors having anchors and the name of their war ship tattooed on their forearms, tattoos have been linked with careers, loved ones and memories from the past.

If you decide to go down this route make sure you employ a tattoo artist that specialises in portrait work and have a good look at his/her previous work beforehand. The internet is littered with images of portrait designs that didn't work out and look nothing like the loved one they are supposed to emulate.

Tattoo Positions

The style and design of your choice of tattoo remain of most importance. However a key factor to consider when planning your new, or even first piece of art must be its position on your body.

This is an intensely personal choice, and must not hindered by outside influences such as partners and family members. The position of your new tattoo may have a bearing on a future career and also on where you can place future tattoos, should you choose to have more.

So it's an important part of the planning process.

Below is a list of potential tattoo positions. With some of their plus and minus points.

1. Biceps.

A great place to start. I find this location to be the easiest to deal with the inevitable pain involved in the tattoo, possibly due to the amount of flesh under the skin. Be aware that if you're planning any kind of sleeve in the future to decide now on the tattoo style. Two or more different styles on the sleeve might not work as well as one continuous one.

2. Forearms.

Similar to the bicep area. Easy area for the tattoo artist to work on. Not as painful as some other areas. The key here is that in the summer weather your tattoo WILL BE VISIBLE. You need to be comfortable with that. Also bear in mind the point about the full sleeve mentioned at number 1.

3. Legs (upper and Lower).

Won't be as frequently visible as the arms (unless you're a nudist) except when you're wearing shorts. The upper leg is fleshy so the pain is similar to that of the bicep. The lower you go the less flesh there is (on most people) and it will smart more.

4. Back (upper and lower).

Consider how big your tattoo is going to be. If the design requires size in order for it to work then think about a full back piece. This will work a lot better than lots of individual tattoos all over your back (which look stupid and ill thought out in my opinion).

If it's a smaller design then consider the left or right shoulder-blade for placement. This is an ideal location and is very popular. There's less flesh in this area so it will probably hurt more. Putting a small design right in the middle of your back will look silly as the body area is too big for it. Either go upper or lower. A popular position these days is along the lower back. Most tribal and script designs are well suited to this position. In my opinion this is a more sensitive area and will hurt more. Anything around the spinal area will definitely hurt more. But everybody's different. Obviously unless the sun is out not many people are going to see these tattoos. This may be a positive aspect if you're looking to keep the tattoo more intimate.

5. Chest/Stomach.
Similar really to the back area in that if the design is big it can cover the whole area. Smaller designs should be positioned on the left or right pec/breast. The tattoo artist can go around your nipples and they should not compromise the design. I find the stomach to be a very sensitive area pain wise, more so that the chest. But like I said everybody's different.

6. Head/face.

Unless you're a truly hardcore tattoo fan I'd stay away from these areas. They are the parts of your body that are always exposed to weather so they are likely to deteriorate/age a lot quicker. They are very "in your face" (no pun intended). You will get stared at a lot in public. They will hurt a lot due to the lack of flesh.

7. Hands/wrists.

Not as "in your face" as the head but they will still get noticed. The areas are lacking in flesh so will hurt more than other locations. Hand tattoos are more popular these days, especially with the ladies. There are many designs that suit the hands well and tend to be more intricate, smaller designs. The hand could also be incorporated into an arm sleeve design so think about your long-term tattoo plans before covering this area.

8. Ankles/feet.

Another set of areas that could be incorporated in a leg sleeve so again think about your long-term plans. These are easily hidden and can remain somewhat intimate.

I have two tattoos on my ankles and they didn't hurt a bit. Other friends have said that theirs were excruciating, so the jury is out. What I have discovered from research with friends is that tattooing the feet HURTS A LOT. I don't have any tattoos on my feet!

Bad Tattoo Designs

If you have a bad tattoo, hindsight has probably shown you what went wrong. This article will hopefully give you some hints to avoid it happening again.

What are the two things I notice most with people as soon as the summer arrives and the sun comes out?

1. A lot of people are overweight, and wear ill-fitting skimpy clothing, exaggerating the fact.

We've all seen them haven't we?

The lopsided heart motif on the forearm which looks like a child's crayon has been used. The "portrait" of a loved one that looks like your favourite animal. The written script that is spelt incorrectly, and isn't straight.

Just Google the term "bad tattoo designs" and look at the images, its horrific. I'd like to think that some of the images are hoaxes but sadly it's probably not the case. Some designs are well crafted, but the subject matter is a joke and was quite obviously conceived when the tattoo collector was less than sober at the time.

So how do you end up with a bad tattoo design?

1. Believing that you or a close friend are the best thing to happen to the tattoo world and attempt to do it yourself. Home made tattoos are the worst culprits. They are poorly executed with the wrong methods and materials and look exactly that. As if a child has crayoned the image on.

2. Getting blind drunk with your friends, managing to convince the tattooist that you are somewhat sober, and deciding that some random cartoon character would look good on you chest. The side effects of drink obviously don't last forever. Wake up in the morning and the first thing you will be thinking off is how to get rid of the ink. You can't. 3. Having a great idea for a tattoo, but not spending enough time to plan the layout. Part of the beauty of tattoo art is how the piece compliments the body placing. For instance, a Japanese dragon flowing down the side of your arm or leg can look very striking. But just plonking it in the most available space on your body can have disastrous effects to any further placing of tattoos. If you've decided on a great piece then fine. But spend MORE TIME deciding on where you're going to place it.

Laser Tattoo Removal - A Business That Continues to Grow

Following the aftercare instructions is very important for a successful outcome. Patients are asked to keep the area moist and refrain from exposing it to sunlight for at least 4 weeks. Cool compresses can be used to help the discomfort if needed.

You don't have to do this anymore. Much like any shopping experience, you can do it in the comfort of you own home. Here are some key points to help you choose an ideal tattoo gallery design.

1. Open Google ( or any other search engine) and type in "tattoo gallery". There will be plenty to look at. Pick a few from the first page and have a look through the sites.

2. Spend a lot of time looking at all of the available images on offer. If you're happy to pay for further access into a site then do so. If you want free, You'll find sites that let you look at the flash designs but not print them off.

Do Tattoos Hurt?

One of the biggest dilemmas facing those looking to get their first tattoo is the level of pain they are likely to be put through. Is it as painful as it looks?

Do tattoos hurt? Lets get this out of the way now. Yes, they are painful. Any procedure involving needles being repeatedly stuck into your skin is going to smart a bit. So now you know.

The better question should probably be how much do tattoos hurt?

Let me reminisce on an incident from my childhood. When I was very young, possibly five or six years old, I used to take baths with my father. He had a tattoo and I was intrigued by it. I can only describe it as a very badly drawn eagle on his bicep. The line work was thick and blotchy, any colour that had been there had long since faded.

It wasn't a very nice tattoo.

But to a five year old, it was the epitome of cool. I used to run my fingers over it. I was fascinated by it. I wanted one.

I guess my father saw some warning signs and thought he would try to dissuade me at an early age. He went into substantial detail regarding much the tattoo had hurt. He described the tattoo artist as plunging huge needles in and out of his arms with great force. He described how the blood spurted everywhere with every inked line. He told me how much it had made him cry, and how much the tattoo had hurt him for weeks to come.

He probably went a bit too far really. But it did the trick. I no longer wanted a tattoo.

Roll forward twelve years and there I am in the tattoo studio about to get the first one. I've chosen the design, now all I'm worried out is the pain. Will I get through it? Will I cry? Will I pass out?

Well, I didn't do any of those things. It hurt, but not as much as I anticipated.

The best way I can describe it is to say it's very much like someone scratching your arm deeply. Short passes of the needle, such as very short lines, hardly hurt at all. Should the tattoo incorporate longer lines then obviously the needle is going to be in your skin for longer so you will feel it. It stings a bit.

Line work is generally completed with a single needle, whilst shading and colouring utilises multiple needles on a single tattoo gun. A bit like a very small comb. The technique used to get the shading and colour completed is very much like when you used to colour in sections of a drawing when you were young. I.e. lots of vigorous "rubbing" back and forth within the line work. This obviously involves a bit more effort from the artist and this is where I experience the most pain.

If your tattoo is very small and only covers a small section of your body, then the needlework will be fairly localised. You may find that the area goes numb after a period of time, so the pain is less.

If your tattoo is big then it will cover a wider area. Once one body part has gone numb the artist is moving onto a new location, so you're never out of the woods. Added to that the fact that you're having needles stuck into you for a lengthy period of time, you may start to suffer after a while and need to consider breaking the tattoo sessions up into small, more manageable chunks.

A big factor here is body location. Certain areas where there is less fat on the body will be more sensitive, so it will hurt more. Some examples are the spine, feet, neck, wrists etc.

So yes, tattoos hurt, but you're probably over estimating the level. If you are concerned about pain, talk to your tattooist. It is better the break the tattoo up into smaller sessions rather than compromise on a small tattoo that you don't really want, in a body location that you have no desire for.
