Places for Tattoos on Men

Whilst the individual style and design of a tattoo remains the most important aspect of your newly acquired ink, the placement on the body follows closely in importance. How and where you display your tattoo will have a factor in how it is admired.

Obviously in the equal opportunity society will now live in, there is nothing to say where each gender can or can't place their tattoos. Tattoos were long considered a male only endeavour but this is simply no longer the case.

However, there will always be differences between the genders and some tattoo locations will have advantages and disadvantages for both.

One of the keys factors in deciding on places for tattoos on men, and women, is to remember that both tend to get tattooed for different reasons. Whereas men tend to go for designs that they can show off, women tend to attach more personal meaning to their artwork and thus will sometimes prefer to place in more discreet locations around the body.

So which body locations are ideal places for the men then?

1. Arms.

Traditionally this is where the majority of men get their first ink. Well, certainly in days gone by anyway. Men's biceps and forearms are often more developed than the ladies. The arm's muscle definition can be accentuated if the tattoo design is placed in the correct way. The arms are often undressed thus this is an ideal location to "display" the tattoo.

If you're hairy, you will have to undertake some personal grooming or you will have trouble seeing your design, especially on the forearms.

2. Chest.

Usually a men only domain. I see a lot of chest tattoos on women these days, but obviously they have other things going on around their chest area that the men don't have to contend with. A males chest is unencumbered and thus ready for a larger tattoo with more opportunities to spread further onto the torso.

The hair issue pops up again, and can be more extreme than on the arms. You might have to start waxing!

3. Head.

Again, mostly a male only option. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that you need to shave your head to see the tattoo (if you regret it you can let it grow back). In western societies women don't tend to shave their heads, therein lies the problem for them. You'll never see their tattoo.

4. Neck.

I've already mentioned that primarily men prefer to show off their ink, This is an ideal location. Men tend to go for shorter hair which leaves the neck area free for inspection.

Men tend to have more muscular and developed backs. Much like the arms, there may be good muscle definition that you can accentuate with a design. If your unlucky enough to get hair here as well you know what you're going to have to do!

5. Legs.

The legs don't tend to get displayed as much unless you're on holiday or enjoying a period of good weather. However the muscle definition issue comes to play again.

I have a tribal design flowing from my waist to my lower leg and have managed to incorporate the shape around the quad muscles. It works well and is a design you could consider.

There are other areas you could consider but the above points cover the general torso. The important aspects to consider are that if you want to show it off, people have got to be able to see it!
